Cable Reel Information:

What is a Cable Reel?

Industrial Cable ReelsA cable reel is a device for handling single or multi-conductor electric cord and cable. This device is a way to store cable in a manageable and safe way. It can also serve as a means to power a device while it is in motion or traveling.

How is a Cable Reel Constructed?

The body of a cable reel is constructed of high structural strength steel with polyester powder coating to prevent corrosion. The Industrial Cable Reels come standard with adjustable guide arm roller assemblies to facilitate payout and retraction in any direction. High grade cord and cables are used to extend the life of what typically is the highest wear component of a cable reel. The outstanding feature used in our Industrial Cable Reels, is the patented and field tested slip ring that has proven itself for many years.

How has UEA Industrial Cable Reels Served the Navy?

UEA Industrial Cable Reels Serve the US Navy:

The US Naval Research Station in Panama City, FL came to UEA with a problem they were having with the current electric cable reel used on every mine sweeping trawler in the US fleet. The Industrial Cable Reels were mounted on the bow of the ship and used to extend the sensing unit down into the ocean in a port to search for mines. The current vendor for this product was having problems with both electrically with signals through the cable reel slip ring. In addition they were having mechanical problems with the cable reel body from the extremely corrosive conditions encountered by the saline environment.

A joint effort between US Naval and UEA engineering conceptualized a design for a UEA cable reel product to meet and overcome these problems. The first problem was relatively easily solved by a standard UEA slip ring design which used solid silver conducting rings with dual silver graphite brush contacts. In addition UEA employed its field tested "breathable" enclosure technique to the cable reel housing area for the slip ring. That is, keep as much moisture away for the slip ring as possible, but when moisture does get inside the enclosure allow it a pathway to get out. The second problem required a modified UEA stainless steel cable reel product. The mounting structure of the cable reel was strengthened to withstand the rigors of water breaking across the bow and the weight of sensor and cable.

The result of this effort between the US Navy and United Equipment Accessories is a product still used by the mine sweeper fleet. The cable reel is lasting years longer than its competition and saving the government thousands of dollars per year in unit and maintenance costs.

What makes UEA Industrial Cable Reels Special?

UEA customizes our Industrial Cable Reels to a higher extent than the competition. We specialize in higher conductor counts than the typical three to four conductors. The main difference in UEA Industrial Cable Reels is that they include a UEA slip ring.

Customize your Industrial Cable Reels

To customize a cable reel United Equipment Accessories needs to know the exact length of extension and retraction. It is also important to know how many conductors will be needed and the gauge size of the conductor. Another question that must be answered to ensure a quality cable reel is which type of application (lift, stretch, drag, or vertical recovery) installation is needed. Other considerations need to be made in regards to the environment the cable reel will be used in.
